Just got my ABIM CV exam registration receipt -- don't forget to schedule your exam early!

Hi everyone,

I just got my ABIM CV exam registration receipt that lets you schedule your exam at a Pearson VUE center. Assignments are first-come first-served, and I was surprised that the test site that I wanted to schedule my exam was already filled for the Nov 5th date. I can't imagine that exam spots are filled because of cardiology fellows signing up for exams so early (the deadline for registration was 5/1 after all), but these test centers also administer tons of other exams, too (e.g., real estate broker exam, GMAT, etc), so I am guessing that local test center availability may vary.

The bottom line...don't forget to sign up early :)

Brian - What does it cost to sign up for the boards these days?

Direct quote from the ABIM website (http://www.abim.org/exam/schedule-cert.aspx):

  • Subspecialty Certification Exams: $1,655 (except for Transplant Hepatology, Interventional Cardiology, and Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology)
  • Subspecialty Certification Exams: $2,000 (Transplant Hepatology, Interventional Cardiology, and Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology)
  • Late Registration fee for 2008 Certification Exams (non-refundable): $400

Time to bust out some extra moonlighting... :)

Thinking about the cost issue, for the future multi-modality imagers out there, multiply these costs for nucs ($895), CT ($895), echo ($895), MRI (coming soon?) and re-cert q10years, and it's adding up, both financially and studying time!

Can someone please explain to me why the boards not only cost so much, but increase so dramatically in price each year?  I took the interventional boards last year, and paid about $1600 (I think).  As I was reading the post above, I see the price has gone up by $400!  I can assure you, it's not because they are using high resolution imaging, or the questions require advanced multimedia.  Most of the questions are straightforward multiple choice, and the cath images are often single frame images from 30 years ago.  I suspect (although I don't know, since I won't take the exam for 10 more years) that many of the questions are recycled from year to year, so that there is no increase in cost for many of the questions.

So tell us ABIM, what's the breakdown in cost?  Or do you figure fellows are a powerless group to raise funds from?

Anuj raises an interesting question...if anyone is following this thread and knows prior years exam fees, I am curious to know what the trend is -- a one-time 25% increase is one thing, but if it has been year-over-year double-digit increases...
