Heartwire news is more than ever the heart of theheart.org

Posted May 26, 2008 at 03:22 PM, EDT

Since we put the beta site of theheart.org on line last Friday, members have challenged us on the importance the new site is giving to Heartwire news.  First, let’s establish that we kept in mind as we created the new site what has built theheart.org’s reputation since 1999 – breaking news – and we went further by expanding the space we are giving to Heartwire news.  And in doing so, we also made it easier and simpler to access.

The new layout allows more news to be seen on the home page

With the new layout, the number of Heartwire news stories on the new home page you see at first sight on your screen is almost triple what it was for the previous site:  We went from three to nine news items.  Now, you can read the feature news in the top story (left column) or see the most recent news (last 2- 3 days) in the middle column. On the previous site you could only see the last day. Here is what nine out of ten members will actually see when landing on the home page (Note: The data has come from close to 5,000 unique visitors to the new theheart.org on the weekend of May 24 – 25).

New site: 9 news items

Old site: 3 news items

However, if you want to maintain a home page where you can scroll all the news, you still have this option by clicking View all Heartwire news. And there it is possible to make a bookmark or make it your default landing page.

We also created new areas where Heartwire news is available

Heartwire news is also available through ten new Clinical conditions pages (accessible through the top menu). Now you can personalize the category of news you want to see by field of interest. So, if you are interested in seeing only the news concerning Interventional/Surgery, you just need to go into that section and make it the default page.  There only news concerning that selection will be presented, and the page can be bookmarked to make it your landing page on theheart.org.

We have added new options to have your Heartwire news delivered

Furthermore, we have added new ways to deliver the news to you. You can use our RSS feed (by using a service like Google Reader, NetVibes or MyYahoo) to have all the latest news pushed directly to you instead of you having to visit the site.  Soon, you will also be able to personalize the RSS feeds for your preferred Clinical conditions.

We are committed to what is theheart.org main’s purpose, and most importantly, we’ve kept all the content and features you’ve valued. We’ve streamlined the design to improve Heartwire news visibility, provided valuable new functionality, and expanded the ways you can access the content. We think the prognosis is positive that you’ll like it!

Comments

I appreciate the publisher’s response, but I am afraid it misses the point. In my opinion, the raison d’être for theheart.org is the content of the Heartwire news stories – clear, factual, independent and unembellished. I feel that the commercial bias within the sponsored content will quickly metastasize rendering a BLEAK PROGNOSIS for theheart.org. The perception of an independent voice is essential to readership’s ability to trust theheart.org. If this perception is compromised through the association of content with a commercial sponsor, this diminishes the trust value of theheart.org in the eyes of the audience. The heart.org will be well advised not to allow advertisers to co-opt trusted content. It is absolutely critical to draw a line between education and promotion, between trusted content and advertising. Only by doing so will theheart.org "attract eyeballs and not criticism"!
