1- Copy the content of a Heartwire news story

If you want to copy a news item and you are using Internet Explorer 6 (or a previous version), you need to use the print function to be able to copy the content of the page.  The print function opens a new window where the content is reformatted.  There you can copy the content and paste it in a word document.

 

 

2- Access the Forum home page

If you are looking for the discussion Forum, we added a link directing you to the Forum home page in the footer of every page of the site.  It’s now easier to access it.

 

 

3- Have the news come to you

Subscribe to theheart.org’s RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feeds to get Heartwire news and other content delivered to your laptop or your desktop.  Pages offering RSS feeds have this symbol in the address bar.  All of our RSS feeds are also available from this page. 
RSS feeds will save you time by automatically pulling for you fresh content from your favorite cardiology news site. You will not have to search anymore for new items on the subject that interests you the most.  If you are not familiar with RSS feeds, here is an interesting four minute video that explains them. 

 

 

4- Share the content with your community and friends

We added next to all the news sharing functionalities (see image).  To share the content you either can use the “Send” button or the “Share” button.  In the latter case, it enables you to share the content with your Facebook, Del.icio.us, Digg or Google community in one click. 

These are only a few tips you can use to get the most from the new THO.  We are working on other new ways to deliver our content as well.  You are invited to share your tips to get the most of theheart.org. 

While creating the new theheart.org, we added some newsletters and modified others to represent the ten clinical conditions highlighted in the site menu.  Now, it’s easier than ever to do it your way.  You may take advantage of the new web site design by visiting the new “Your Profile” page.  The content has been simplified and redesigned to fit in one page.  You are now able to edit your personal information and your newsletter subscriptions by scrolling down just this one page.  It’s another way that THO has improved your site experience!

In the coming days and weeks we will talk more about the new features we are introducing and those still to come in the next months.

We are getting ready to launch the new theheart.org.  We have updated the beta site to correct some problems and to modify some visuals to improve navigation (Like accessing all heartwire news ).
Most importantly we inserted with that update a new feature that will enhance your site experience.  

We have introduced over the past months blogs for more places to share your thoughts with your peers and start discussions.  We are going a step further by introducing a tool which will enable you to start
a discussion on any piece of content from heartwire news.
Whenever you read an article, you will be able to start a discussion by leaving a comment by only clicking the comment tool located beside every news item or in the “Post a new comment” box at the bottom of the article.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Furthermore, you also can go to the box “Discussion and opinions” to see all discussions happening on the site.  

 

Or you can go on the home page or any Clinical Condition home page to see which news has been commented and how many comments have been posted.  By clicking on “Comments” you will be directed to the discussions.

 

Finally, if you do not have time to regularly visit THO to see if there are new comments, we have added an RSS feed.  If you choose this function, comments will come to you instead of you having to come to the site to get the new ones.  Neat, isn’t it! 

The comment tool is one more step to give you more opportunities to be part of the content of THO. Soon we will be introducing more new tools, like video commenting, which will improve your experience even more with theheart.org.   

We have already explained how we made heartwire news more visible and more accessible on the site. We also redesigned the home page by removing the unnecessary elements and by focusing on what’s happening inside the site. So, if you scroll down the whole page (which is a third of the length of the old site), you have at a glance the most recent content available in the Editorial series (Thumbs up Thumbs down, Cardiology show, etc), and the latest posts in Discussion and opinions (Topolog, Fellows corner, Forum).

The right column is still dedicated to CME programs, but we changed and improved the way we introduce them.  No more banners!  We are introducing video previews which will enable you to see a 30 – 40 second clip of the latest CME program.   

In regard to advertising and promotion, this content is now reduced to a minimum.  We have come down from three to one advertising banner on the new site.  Finally, and probably the most discussed issue, Info from Industry.  This feature was on the former site, and we have modified its format to comply with the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) guidelines to ensure the independence of CME activities.     

In other words, we are giving more importance to news, editorial and opinions than ever before, and at the same time we are minimizing advertising in our new site in order to find the right balance.  We think it’s a fair deal.  And please keep telling us what you think!

The new layout allows more news to be seen on the home page

With the new layout, the number of Heartwire news stories on the new home page you see at first sight on your screen is almost triple what it was for the previous site:  We went from three to nine news items.  Now, you can read the feature news in the top story (left column) or see the most recent news (last 2- 3 days) in the middle column. On the previous site you could only see the last day. Here is what nine out of ten members will actually see when landing on the home page (Note: The data has come from close to 5,000 unique visitors to the new theheart.org on the weekend of May 24 – 25).

However, if you want to maintain a home page where you can scroll all the news, you still have this option by clicking View all Heartwire news. And there it is possible to make a bookmark or make it your default landing page.  

We also created new areas where Heartwire news is available

Heartwire news is also available through ten new Clinical conditions pages (accessible through the top menu). Now you can personalize the category of news you want to see by field of interest. So, if you are interested in seeing only the news concerning Interventional/Surgery, you just need to go into that section and make it the default page.  There only news concerning that selection will be presented, and the page can be bookmarked to make it your landing page on theheart.org.

We have added new options to have your Heartwire news delivered

Furthermore, we have added new ways to deliver the news to you. You can use our RSS feed (by using a service like Google Reader, NetVibes or MyYahoo) to have all the latest news pushed directly to you instead of you having to visit the site.  Soon, you will also be able to personalize the RSS feeds for your preferred Clinical conditions. 

We are committed to what is theheart.org main’s purpose, and most importantly, we’ve kept all the content and features you’ve valued. We’ve streamlined the design to improve Heartwire news visibility, provided valuable new functionality, and expanded the ways you can access the content. We think the prognosis is positive that you’ll like it!

But, what hasn’t changed is the quality and depth of the news coverage and content offering. 

What is changing?Here are a few of the highlights we are proud to present in Phase One of the roll-out:

• The layout - theheart.org 2.0 layout will be a dramatic departure. Though it will still focus on breaking news it will also be more visual, more dynamic and allow members easier access to the rich content on theheart.org.
• Clinical conditions and communities of practice - we’ll be implementing personalizable homepages for major clinical conditions to make it easier for members to find all the content associated with the conditions that interest them. We’re also creating communities of practice where professionals can find information and exchange views specific to their practice. The first of these is the Fellows Corner launching with the initial release of theheart.org 2.0.
• Discussion and commentary - soon members will be able to attach comments and instantly create a discussion thread to almost any piece of content. This is a feature members have been requesting, and will help generate more discussion around important issues. Another new feature we will be adding is the ability to attach video comments.
• Thought Leader and Peer blogs - new to the site is a cutting edge video blogging system that will allow thought leaders to create their own minisites within theheart.org and comment on the news, other commentary or external content in real time. That means commentary and analysis that is even more timely and pertinent. Many of our members are already familiar with Dr Eric Topol’s popular blog “Topolog”.
• Even more exclusive content - theheart.org 2.0 will feature even more exclusive editorial series and new content developed through academic partnerships with leading institutions.

Coming for a roll-out this fall This fall we’ll be adding even more new functionality to the site. Here are a few of the new features: RSS feeds - Podcasts - THO for mobile. -  Taking theheart.org 2.0 to the next level
